     Waukegan Airshow,  Waukegan, IL
September 11, 2010

If you live in the Chicago, southern Wisconsin area along the Lake, or northern Indiana area and are a warbird enthusiast and have not been attending this show in Waukegan, you have been missing a great event.  Supported with warbirds from the Warbird Heritage Foundation on the field with its pristine and rare restorations of warbirds, this show every year has warbirds on display and flying that other shows only dream about.  This year was no exception as can be seen below.  The local population seems to understand this and turned out in mass in spite of rain and low clouds in the morning.  It look an hour beyond the scheduled start time to get the ceiling up to minimums and another 2 hours before all the clouds cleared out but everyone flew the show.  I will be back in 2011 for this.  It is a keeper.

Paul Wood taking off in his L-39 with the gear doors closing.

The Hoppers under a gray sky.  Flight of four L-39s.

The Aerostars.

Paul Wood on take-off in his F-86.

High speed down low photo pass!

Low speed down and dirty pass.

The Trojan Horsemen.

Ready...

Break!

Tony Kazian riding backwards on Dave Dacy's great super Stearman.

Tony standing on his head for another low pass with the F-18 and F-86 in the foreground.

Tony Kazian with his green socks that are optional for wing walkers.  If I remember correctly from the Rockford, IL show the socks were a either a birthday or Christmas present from his daughter.

The weather starts to clear with blue skies starting to appear as Vlado Lenoch puts on another superb aerobatic routine in his P-51 "Moonbeam McShine".

Heritage Flight with Vlado in the Mustang and Major Johnny Green in the Thunderbolt II.

Setting up for the overhead pass.

Legacy Flight with the T-2 Buckeye from the Warbird Heritage Foundation located at Waukegan.

Overhead Legacy Pass with blue skies.

The Buckeye landing.

This T-6G on static display is owned by the Warbird Heritage Foundation at the Waukegan Airport.

This Douglas A-4 is one of only two that are currently flyable and owned by civilian museums.  This is also part of the Warbird Heritage Foundation.

Douglas AD-1 Skyraider.  It is also part of the Warbird Heritage Foundation.  You can tell it is a real Skyraider because it has engine oil down the side of the fuselage.  The sign of a real warbird!!  When the oil drips to the ground it has then marked its spot.

All the way from Indianapolis is this great T-34 owned by David Rothenanger.  (R+10)

This T-28 is one the Trojan Horsemen and is owned by Jim Stitt in Cincinnati, OH.

This Trojan Horseman is owned by L&P of MKE in Milwaukee, WI.

East Iowa Air owns this T-28 that also performs with the Trojan Horsemen.

John Mitchard brought this Trojan all the way from Sherrills Ford, NC for the performance.

Nancy Bourke of Lake Zurich, IL is getting into an L-39 in preparation of a ride.

Ready to go!!

Taxing out with the other three L-39s of the Hoppers right behind.  This L-39 is owned by The Warbird Preservation Foundation in Moline, IA.

L-39 owned by the Warbird Education Foundation of Frisco, TX.

This L-39 was brought into the show to perform with the Hoppers by Tim Brutsche of Battle Creek, MI.

The last L-39 out is Paul Woods' aircraft with David Rothenanger (R+10) waving from the backseat.

After a half hour formation flight Nancy is all smiles with her pilot for the ride David Mills.  A great day at the air show!!!
